Grant for Food Pantries
What We fund:
We will fund only 501(c) (3) not for profit food programs that operate in Southwest Detroit and areas.
- Funding to obtain food related items
- Frozen food items (primarily meat related and vegetables) from the LFSD Food Inventory
- Funding to provide paper products, soap, and household cleaning supplies
- Funding to acquire refrigerators/freezers that support the food program
How Much and How Long
Grant Applications will be accepted throughout the year. In some instances, grant renewals are considered but are never automatic. The applicant for a renewal grant must submit a new proposal each year by May 1st of the following year of approval of the original grant, along with a report of the activities of the preceding year.
Please make your application realistic. Do not inflate your request anticipating that you will get less than you requested. While we sometimes offer a smaller grant, it is also possible that we would not fund a request if we were unable to meet your stated needs.
How to Apply
Applicant's Responsibilities
It must be understood at the time of the application that if you are awarded a grant, we will request a short report on how the grant money was used quarterly after the grant is awarded. This quarterly report should state:
- How many households are you serving per month?
- How many individuals?
- Age population served 0-18, 18-64, 64+
- Gender served: Male/Female
- Cost of food and food related items purchased by providing copies of receipts
- Quantity of frozen items delivered from the LFSD Food Inventory
Additionally, twice annually, the organization will allow LFSD Board Members to observe the operation of the pantry operations on a day that distribution of food occurs.
Distribution of Funds
Funds for the purchase of food, paper products, soap, and household cleaning supplies will be distributed on a quarterly basis: July, October, January and April.
Funds to acquire refrigerators/freezers and other items that support the food program will be distributed upon approval by the LFSD Board.
When to Apply
The LFSD Board meets monthly. To insure a timely consideration of your proposal, the sooner the request is received; the better your chances are for meeting the next Board review.
